ABOUT CELTA

What is CELTA?

CELTA stands for ‘Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults’, and is accredited by Cambridge ESOL, part of the University of Cambridge. With a CELTA certificate, you can teach all over the world. It is internationally recognised as an initial teaching qualification, and is the most highly respected certificate of its kind. You never know where it'll take you!

Read more about why you should take CELTA on the Cambridge ESOL website.

Who is CELTA for?

It is an introductory course for those wishing to teach English as a Foreign Language (EFL). It is designed for trainees with no experience in EFL, but is also suitable for teachers with some experience who would like to learn how to teach using the communicative approach.

What does the course involve?

During a four-week full-time CELTA course, you will:

• gain practical skills to prepare you to teach English to adults;
• get hands-on teaching experience;
• build your confidence in the classroom.

The course is structured so that you:

▪ do a minimum of six hours of observed teaching;
▪ get feedback on your teaching from the trainees and your peers;
▪ receive 120 hours of input sessions, in five main areas:
• the teaching and learning context;
• language analysis and awareness;
• language skills: listening, reading, writing, speaking;
• planning and resources for different contexts;
• developing teaching skills and professionalism.

How is the course assessed?

You are assessed continually throughout the course, based on your planning, teaching, and four 750-1000 word written assignments. There is no final exam. Internationally, there is a 97% pass rate for CELTA, and it is very rare for trainees to fail. You will be kept up-to-date with your progress throughout the course, and given advice to help you improve your teaching as much as possible.

An external assessor, appointed by Cambridge ESOL, moderates each course to ensure that standards are equally high around the world.

Testimonials from previous courses

I left the Canadian oil field and started my teaching career with a TESOL certification. Within my first year of teaching it was clear that I wanted more education to fall back on. The decision to take a CELTA course was an easy one and based on some key factors, career advancement, stability, self-confidence and professionalism played a key role. Sevastopol Exam Centre offers a great experience in a city rich with culture and history. Also, the early schedule for the course gives you a competitive edge when interviewing for September start. The tutors are top notch and committed to providing you with the tools needed in a modern teaching environment in order to be successful in the classroom. A four week course is intense, no question. However, by applying yourself the rewards are fantastic. I can attest by saying that a CELTA certification has opened doors for me that were not achievable in the past and I am now enjoying a fruitful career with teaching English.

Ryan Williams, 2013

I did CELTA course in Sevastopol Exam Centre last year. And it was one of the most important pieces of experience in my life. Our tutors were really helpful, they tried to create a very comfortable atmosphere and supported us 24/7, even during their weekends. Thanks to our tutors Olga and Helen all of us completed the course successfully and had a superb celebration afterwards. It’s a super cool school and I’m considering a possibility to get back to Sevastopol and work there. So if you want to have a really great time in a beautiful city and have CELTA, you should go to Sevastopol Exam Centre.

Alyona Bastrykina, 2013

The course was an invaluable experience in self-development.

Nastya K., 2012

I wish I’d had such practice while studying at University. Now I think that the only way to learn how to teach is when you have everything in complex: teaching practice, observations, feedback.

Zoia K. , 2012

I find the teaching practice extremely useful because it’s always good to learn some techniques and put them immediately into practice.

Yana S., 2012

Input sessions were very interesting, helpful and made us think and create.

Natalia Z., 2012

I find the course to be very insightful. There is much that I had previously not been exposed to, and the course is very experiential-based. I feel motivated to try out many new things when I return to my school.

Wes Steele, 2011

I am extremely happy that I’m learning a lot of different techniques that I can apply while teaching in Qatar.
